Beautiful and Unique Cups by Artist Stanislavs Vilums

Special, beautiful, iridescent, and entirely unique cups crafted through the process of reduced ceramic firing by artist Stanislavs Vilums at his and his wife’s ceramic workshop, Cukrasáta, in Latvia.

About Ceramic Artist Stanislavs Vilums:

Stanislavs was born in 1968 in Jaunstrūžāni, Rēzekne region, Latvia. He studied at Rēzekne Vocational School No. 14 and earned a diploma as a ceramic art producer. In 1990, he became one of the founders of Pūdnīku skūla, a group under the Latvian Cultural Foundation. Since its establishment, he has actively participated in the group's activities and has contributed significantly to the promotion of ceramics.
Stanislavs is also a member of the National Studio for Applied Arts (TLMS) Rēzeknes apriņķa pūdnīki (Ceramicists of the Rēzekne Region). In 2000, he earned the title TDM (Master of Folk Crafts).
Since 1990, he has specialized in reduced firing ceramics, creating all his works on a potter's wheel. The firing process is done in a wood-fired kiln, using no industrial technologies. The ceramics are 100% handmade, making every piece a unique and exclusive work of art.
His creations have been exhibited in Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Russia, Belarus, Germany, and the Czech Republic. Stanislavs’ works are found in private collections across Europe, America, Asia, and Australia.

About the Ceramic Workshop Cukrasáta:

The ceramics house Cukrasáta follows ancient ceramic traditions in an authentic workshop set in a modern rural area. The ceramics are crafted using both hand-building techniques and the potter's wheel. The finished pieces are wood-fired, with the kiln heated by an open flame.
The unique black or black-silver tones of the ceramics are achieved through a natural reduction process. This technique imparts liveliness and depth to the ceramics, akin to the character of black-and-white photography. Reduced ceramics are a blend of the artisan’s skill and the playful nature of fire.

Initially, the ceramics have a natural smoky scent, which fades over time with use and washing. Some people cherish this scent, likening it to the natural aromas of fresh milk or a new leather bag. Unfinished ceramic surfaces absorb scents through their pores. For instance, storing apples in a ceramic bowl may eventually give the bowl an apple fragrance, while coffee might leave its mark if left in a ceramic cup for an extended period.

Care Instructions:

Handwashing is recommended, as the cups are treated with natural, edible oil (olive oil) to make them water-resistant and easier to maintain. Washing them in a dishwasher will gradually remove this protective layer due to high temperatures.
If you prefer to use a dishwasher, it should be at a lower temperature.
